Mackie’s, now sell chocolate. Yes, they do. Not just lush ice-cream. (Review)

In the past, Mackie’s has always stuck in my mind as the king of ice-creams around here, with the creamy, silky texture.  My mother is very ice-cream picky, and she could always tell if I tried to substitute with something else, if the shop had sold out of her favourite brand.

Mackies Chocolate 2

On Twitter, I was chatting with someone, who said Mackie’s sold chocolate, and from there, Mackie’s got in touch and sent me some samples to try.

Considering it’s Mackie’s, and it’s chocolate, there was no way I would say no to that.  They didn’t ask me to review, but the chocolate tasted so good, how could I not?

It was impressive to find that the ingredients are all natural, and GM-free, and my samples came in the following flavours.

  • Traditional Milk (My favourite)
  • Honeycomb Milk (Kids favourite)
  • Dark Mint Chocolate (Really really good.  I don’t usually like dark chocolate, but I liked this)
  • Dark Chocolate (I didn’t taste this, but I’m told it was lovely)

The chocolate is every bit as good as the ice-cream.  I put a bar of the Honeycomb Milk on my mum’s tray at night, as she often likes a square or two of chocolate if she wakes up during the night. When I took her up a coffee in the morning, all I could see was the empty wrapper…….  The Milk Chocolate was melt in the mouth good and creamy.  Just how I like it.

I can just imagine brownies, or chocolate tiffin, or melted chocolate with strawberries.

Mackie’s are even building a chocolate factory in Aberdeenshire, and that’s one place I am going to enjoy visiting when the time comes, next year, I think.

I saw the farm where Mackie’s make products on the news last night, with their impressive new solar farm, that will export power back into the national grid.

There are new flavours in the pipline, which might even include salted caramel and white chocolate.

Their Aberdeenshire farm has over 500 Jersey and Holstein cows and also produce crisps made from potatoes they grow in Scotland.  Mackie’s seems to be a brand worth a watching for me.

Once a chocoholic, always a chocoholic…

And if there’s none in the shops near you, they sell online too.

Showing off kids creativity in the home.

Five interesting and clever ways to show off kids creativity in the home, in collaboration with the removals furniture storage team at Removal Services Scotland.

————————————————————

Why don’t you display your children’s talent and show their skills around the house?

As well as being proud of what they’ve produced, their work will be on display for their friends and family, to admire at every visit.

If your children are shy, display the handiwork in their bedrooms, or even inside a cupboard, where they can pop in and admire their work in secret.

1. The wall of frame.

crafty

This is a great idea if you have some spare frames lying around, as every good piece of imagination needs framed and displayed, especially if it’s made by the hands of our little ones.

Hanging our kids artwork on the walls, makes their creations look neater and more professional.  If you also adorn the frames with some nifty colours, the artwork will take on a whole new impression from a distance.

Having some self decorated frames around is always a good idea.  It makes swapping out artwork – quick and easy, as their skill and dedication for new and often intriguing pieces of art change focus.

2.  Let them draw on the walls.

I hear you all gasp loudly….

Despite our little ones affinity for scribbling on every surface possible from a very young age, drawing on walls is usually the stuff of parents worst nightmares.  If a sense of carefree abandon hits squarely between the eyes, and you choose to go down this route, you can show off their creativity in a controlled area.

My Family Hands

Option 1

Draw outlines on the wall and let their minds go wild.  They can be as creative as they wish, filling in the shapes with every shade of colour imaginable.

Option 2

If you don’t want to draw straight onto your walls, why not buy a large canvas and decorate it together.  As well as enjoying some quality family time, your joint artwork can then be hung in pride of place on their walls.  If you’re very adventurous, your children could decorate a canvas that you’ve already nailed in place, with a modern abstract concept.

3. Personalised fridge magnets / book-marks.

Every parent knows that the fridge is where artwork goes….

Why not spice it up a little, by having their little masterpieces turned into personalised magnets, or as book-marks that can hang on the fridge, always there, always ready for the next excursion into a good book.

Good reading habits start early, and using the magnets and book-marks as presents for their friends and relatives, can kill two birds with one stone.  Grandparents will definitely love a gift with a personalised touch.

4. Get creative with seasonal decorations.

Christmas is a time for creativity.  More than any other time of year, it’s when families can come together with great ideas for decorations, and presents everyone will love during the festivities.

Coming home from school with new craft skills they’ve learned is a common theme among children in the run up to Christmas.  Make the most of those skills, whether they’re making a paper holly wreath, paper chains, or little decorations for the tree.  Kids love to show of those new abilities.

Whether it’s painted autumn leaves on the window, decorating Easter eggs or at Christmas time you are all bound to get in the holiday spirit and everyone will see how talented your children are.

5. Show off their baking skills.

Not all creativity needs to be shown in an artistic way.  As well as crafts like sewing, model making and even making loom band models, there’s something for everyone, but the one thing we all do….is eat.  Baking sweet treats and helping to make decorative meals, can show off new skills, as well as helping with mealtimes.

Let’s face it, what kid doesn’t love to get messy in the kitchen, so put a smile on their faces with a little help from specialist cookbooks and online recipe sources.

Win 6kg of premium Caffe Pera Coffee Beans for International Coffee Day. Giveaway Ends 30th October.

In the US, they celebrate National Coffee Day on the 29th September, but for this year, 2015, the first official International Coffee Day is set for the 1st October, where 75 Member States of the International Coffee Organisations, and many other businesses, will be celebrating coffee in all its forms.

Coffee Rant

Join the 75 Member States of the International Coffee Organization and dozens of associations and businesses in celebrating coffee’s journey of diversity, quality and passion.

Many of us love a cup of coffee in a morning, and the growth of coffee shops in my local area seems to tell it’s own tale, with Starbucks and Costa shops seeming to spring up from nowhere.

Coffee CupI walked into Starbucks with my youngest a couple of days ago, and stood goggle eyed at the list of drinks.  Apart from Cappuchino and Latte, I didn’t recognise any of them.  I certainly had no idea that a Frappuchino even existed.

To help us along, Cafepoint have shared their 15 Types Of Coffee To Try Before You Die.  From there, I learned how to actually make a Frappuchino at home, instead of costing me over £4 a go at our local coffee shop.

Perhaps I’ve been living under a very shielded cloud, but a Macchiato is something I’d never actually heard of in the past.   The fact it includes caramel sauce and vanilla syrup means that, as a diabetic, it is pretty much off the list for me, but it sounds like another one my kids would like to try.

The Giveaway

In support of International Coffee Day, Cafepoint, have very generously offered a kg bag of Premium Caffe Pera coffee beans as a giveaway on the Scottish Mum blog.

That could well be enough for a cup of coffee a day, for up to a year, so get entering.  One lucky winner will enjoy this giveaway.

Nutribullet / Blender Recipe: Mango, Blueberry, Strawberry and Pecan Half Smoothie

Mango 4 Smoothie

The mangos make this a lovely and sweet recipe.  It’s more than enough to fill me up for breakfast and often just as a snack if I’m peckish late in the evening.  This is one of my all time favourites.

Carbs in the mangos are high, but for this recipe, I forgive them, considering they taste amazing and it’s carbs from fruit and not from processed food.

Miss out the nuts to drop the calorie count enormously, but this is a great meal replacement for me.

New Naturelly Brilliant: Jelly Juice (Review)

Ok, I have to admit to being initially hesitant, as jelly and juice don’t quite seem to go well together, but when our samples arrived, I decided to try it for myself.

Jelly Juice 2 Medium

In the past, I’ve tried children’s juices that only make me thirsty, but I didn’t find that with these samples.  I’d buy these again, especially for visiting younger children, and I do think that around 36 to 37 calories per drink, it’s easy to persuade myself that this was a good option.

Jelly Juice 3 Small

Let’s go deeper.

The juices are gelatine free, they have no added sugar or sweeteners and have added vitamins A, C & E.   They also state that they are free from wheat, dairy, nuts and bees, for those of you for whom that matters.

We tried three flavours of Naturelly Jelly Juice.

  • Summer Fruits
  • Apple & Blackcurrant
  • Tropical Fruits

I prefer the tropical fruits, and my eldest quite liked the summer fruits.  He liked how it slides down your throat without having to break it up.  No chew jelly as it were.

For added interest, I put some in a small glass and gave kids a spoon to taste, and they actually liked it like that.  With a little yoghurt in the bottom and some chocolate shaved over the top, or some fruit on the bottom and squirty cream on the top, it could even make for a lovely and refreshing low calorie dessert, but also getting some much needed fluids into children who struggle with fluid intake.

Jelly Juice Constrained

Food choices are always what we make of them.  When one of my boys was younger and ill, I could have used something like this to slide over his throat when he had tonsillitis, not to mention being a great packed lunch staple.

Suitable from age 2+, I think these are worth a try.  I just wish I’d seen them when my kids were very little.

Cauliflower and Cheese Sauce

Cauliflower and Cheese Sauce

This is another recipe that was practiced at home for my son’s home economics homework.  He had intended to make for just two people, but as the recipe he downloaded wasn’t terribly good, I got him to make a version that would be easier to cope with.  If you’re comfortable with white sauce, make it your own way.

Lesley Smith

Cauliflower and Cheese Sauce

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 40 minutes
Total Time 55 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 3 Small - Medium Cauliflowers
  • 100 g Butter
  • 100 g Plain Flour
  • 1 Litre Milk
  • 150 g Cheddar Cheese
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Cherry Tomatoes

Method

  1. Set the oven to heat at around 180-190C.

  2. Wash and cut the cauliflower into clumps. Not too large, or it will take longer to cook. Put it into a large saucepan with a pinch of salt, and cook the cauliflower for ten minutes, or until it softens. Then put it into a sieve and drain. Set aside while you make the cheese sauce.

  3. Over a medium heat, using a thick bottomed pan, add butter, milk and flour. Melt the butter slowly into the mix, then bring to a bubble while it thickens. You will need to stir the sauce as it cooks, as white sauce is easily burned.

  4. When the sauce has thickened, add salt and pepper to taste, then remove from the heat and add in the cheese, a handful at a time, folding it in until it has all melted.

  5. Put the cauliflower into an oven dish, and pour your cauliflower in, then pour the sauce over the top.

  6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until the top of your cauliflower cheese begins to turn a golden brown shade.

  7. Serve with parsley and chopped cherry tomatoes.

Apple & Cucumber Jelly Jam

Apple and Cucumber Jelly Jam

With an over abundance of cucumbers from the plot, finding things to make with it, is more difficult than it looks.  We also had a bag full of small apples from the communal apple trees down there, so I made a lovely version of jam, that is more like a jelly version, as it was whizzed by my hand-held mixer until all the bits dissolved into the jam.

I suspect much of this will be added to stir fries over the winter, as it’s a perfect mixture of sweet, yet I can still taste the cucumber, which is odd, given that in the cucumber and courgette jam, I couldn’t taste it at all.

Lesley Smith

Apple & Cucumber Jelly Jam

4.50 from 2 votes
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes
Servings: 8 Jars
Course: Preserves
Cuisine: Jam

Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg Mixed Apple and Cucumber. Peeled washed and chopped into bite sized pieces.
  • 1.5 kg Sugar. I used caster sugar for this recipe.
  • 1.5 Sachets Pectin from Tate & Lyle
  • 2 Knobs Butter

Method

  1. Put the apple and cucumber into a large pot with a thick bottom. This is a fairly large portion for a home preserve session, so a decent preserve making pot is a good idea. My one is a Lakeland special and is one of my favourite kitchen pots.

  2. Put the heat on and slowly let the fruit and veg break down a little, just enough to soften it. If you need to, add a tablespoon of water at a time, but be sure to bubble it off before you add the sugar.

  3. Add the sugar and pectin, along with the butter, and bring to a slow boil. This is when I take my hand mixer and whizz the mix, to smooth it out. Be very careful if you do this, as you're dealing with boiling sugar and it's very easy to spray yourself. I have managed to spark myself with boiling sugar and it's very painful indeed. Take extra care if you do.

  4. Let it rapid boil until your jam reaches the setting point, when the jam wrinkles slightly when you put a drop onto a chilled plate.

  5. Jar the mixture into sterilised jars, then simply enjoy whenever you need it.

Five Home Repairs Anyone Can Do in Time for the Holidays

Today’s guest post is in collaboration with Ridgeons.  It’s coming to the holiday time again, in the second part of the year, where we wonder where the time has flown, and how we’re going to do everything in time.  I have to say, I think every girl should have a drill and a few screwdrivers tucked away in a tool box.

——————

The holidays are one of the few times a year that all corners of the family have the chance to spend quality time together. That means that the months leading up to it are the opportune time to make any improvement to the home that you’ve been putting off lately. Here are five simple repairs anyone can do.

Squeaky Hinges

A squeaky door hinge is bearable with just few people in the home, but with a full house constantly moving between rooms it can quickly become gruelling. Fortunately, it’s a quick fix. Spray a little WD-40 onto the hinges and then move the door back and forth to work in the lubricant. If this doesn’t work, you could also try rubbing petroleum jelly directly onto the hinges.

Slamming Doors

Equally annoying can be slamming doors, especially if you have excited kids running around. You can soften the blow by affixing a one or two pieces of felt pads inside the door frame. If you forget about this one, and don’t have time to run to the shops, hook a wide rubber band around the doorknobs on both sides, making sure it doesn’t cover the latch. This will help to cushion the impact.

Peeling Wallpaper

Noticed that edge of wallpaper starting to peel out of the corner of your eye lately? Peel the paper back until you reach the point that it’s securely attached to the wall. Now use a small paintbrush to apply a thin layer of glue to the back of the loose piece. Once reattached, smooth it down with a clean cloth, being careful to remove any air bubbles that have formed.

Dry Chopping Boards

With all of those vegetables to prepare for the big meal, it might be time to bring new life to that chopping board of yours. If it has any deep cuts, you might want to sand these down as they’ll trap food and make it more difficult to clean later on. User a sander like those available here. Wooden boards will also start to dry out over use so warm a bottle of mineral oil in some hot water. Wipe the oil onto the surface with a soft cloth and then wipe off the excess a few hours later.

Stained Bathtub

If you have any stains in your bathtub that don’t seem to disappear no matter how hard you scrub, try speeding up the process with the help of a little white vinegar. Pour in three cups along with some hot tap water and the let the tub fill up over the stain. Give it a few hours to soak and then when you let the water drain out any stains should easily scrub off.

Have any alternate tips yourself? Let us know all about them in the comments below.

Tips for Filling a Christmas Stocking

This guest post is brought to you in collaboration with Just Miniatures.  I know, I know, it’s only September, but I’ve already bought some of my gifts for this year, otherwise I’d never make it through the holiday season.

—————-

The Christmas stocking might seem like the easiest gift to handle come Christmastime, especially as you don’t have to faff about with all that wrapping paper and sellotape. But then when the time comes to put the stocking together you can often find that you don’t have enough small gifts to fill the space.

Every year it can be a challenge to come up with creative ways to fill Christmas stockings, especially if you continue the tradition as your kids get older and their tastes change, or if you do stockings for the entire family – adults included. Here’s a guide to make the Christmas stockings just that little bit easier this year, and help you find great gifts for all the family.

A New Hobby

We think of stocking gifts as little, fun, throwaway items that will probably end up in the bin – or eaten – after a few months; and while this type of stocking gift most definitely has a place, it can be nice to include some more long-term gifts – such as something to start up a new hobby.

There are a huge amount of options when it comes to hobby gifts, for example you could include a little ceramic plant pot and a packet of vegetable seeds so your kids can start growing their very own crops, albeit on a tiny scale. You could also go for a starter kit of magic tricks to learn – they’ll love putting on a show for all the family.

For slightly older kids who already have hobbies, you can always include items to make their current hobbies more enjoyable, for example if they’re really into sports then you could add a pair of headphones specifically designed to stay put during activity. For big kids – aka the husband – you could go for a poker set so he can teach himself to play, and then have game night with his friends once the festivities are over.

Don’t Forget the Edibles!

Sweets and treats are pretty standard stocking fare as they’re guaranteed to be a hit with all ages. Whether it’s the traditional Satsuma and walnut, or something more avant garde like a gift voucher to their favourite restaurant, there should always be something delicious in a stocking – Christmas is a time of guilt-free indulgence.

For younger kids go with a gift pack of their favourite sweets, as well as a few surprises that they might not have tried before – even if they end up not liking them, it’s an exciting experience to discover and try new things. For slightly older kids you can include things like jelly cubes in interesting flavours, international sweets that they won’t have seen before, or bake mix – an activity and a treat!

For avid chefs a good wild-card option is to include a Christmas themed recipe book, and maybe a little ingredient kit for one of the recipes so they can get straight in the kitchen. Finally for adults include some of their favourite chocolate, a selection box of truffles, and other snacks – including savory ones like beef jerky. Don’t forget to include a little of their favourite tipple from a company like Just Miniatures… well it is Christmas after all.

White Chocolate and Peanut Crispy Tiffin Recipe

Peanut Tiffin
This really is a heart attack in a sticky, gooey, sweet treat, but oh boy, is it ever so tasty.

My eldest had to make treats for selling at school, and as we didn’t have all the traditional ingredients, we had to change a more traditional tiffin style recipe to suit what we did have.  We finely grated a little chocolate over the top for added decoration.
