It’s a great idea to be able to make your own squishy mix, as well as making the crafty piece of art with the mix we make, rather than just getting it out of a box. I read a few reviews that said theirs didn’t set, but ours set perfectly wall. I’ve no idea what they did.

The steps are well set out and will need a little guiding hand from the adult in charge for the first one. We used the paw mould for the review and it came out lovely. The quishy stuff can make for good stress relief if we want it to. Getting hold or more of the gels and dyes is the next step for us. Lovely wee set at a good price.

What you NEED to know about Margaret, the Monofilament Wig by JB Extension in Light Copper

This is my wee video review and introduction to the gorgeous fully hand tied monofilament top wig from JB Extension. Margaret is absolutely beautiful. Within half an hour of combing her out, setting my part and adding a little height, I am pleased as punch to be able to wear this wig. I think this is actually one of my colours and one I should wear more often.

Covid came for my hair and I decided not to be embarassed about the hairloss, so the wig life it is for me. The colours in Margaret are a mix of copper, with some blonde and some red through it, so it’s multi dimensional.

Margaret is made by a human person, hand made, fibre by fibre. I can’t even begin to say how lovely Margaret is to wear on my head. I’ve made a quick video for you to have a good look at what she is like.

It’s important to remember, that wigs out of the box will have a zigzag part, and will be in a set part, with established curls. For Margaret, I have combed with a wide tooth comb, fluffed the top with my fingers and redirected the part line to be a bit more bouncy with a hairdryer blow out.

What Did We Think?

This is a lovely wee set for kids who like to create and make nice things. Something about slime just never seems to go out of fashion, no matter how old we are.

To use, it is just a case of mixing the dye and scents and it makes awesome slime for the garden. It then goes into the little pots and is able to be topped off with the little charms. The instructions are handy for learning how to make the best of the kit and these kits are great for keeping little hands busy on long days, holidays and just for some fun and interaction.

There are six different slimes to make six little mini flower pots, and each one can have its own theme.

Fairy, Honeybee, Lotus, Spring, Desert and Sunflower are the themes with all the little extras to make the different types of garden.

The lovely people at Simba sent us a mattress to review. One of the grown up youngsters decided it would be a good fit, and delivery of the double hybrid mattress came swiftly.

The box is a bit deceptive size wise, but it is a very heavy box, so be careful when attempting to move it around. We’re new to the Simba mattress, so it’s been a lovely mattress for us to review. I’ve often wondered about Simba mattresses as I’ve seen adverts in the past, but had no experience of them.

Be careful cutting the wrapping, as we don’t want to risk cutting through to the mattress itself. The mattress expands an awful lot once it is removed from its wrapping. There are guide marks to help us get it right. Don’t try unrolling it beside anything fragile, as it springs out from the plastic wrap with some force.

Opening the Box

Unravelling was easy enough, although the mattress is absolutely very heavy. We popped it on the mattress base before opening the wrapping and letting it do it’s thing. It takes about 6-8 hours to be fully inflated, which we left if to do its own. Simba will even recycle your old mattress for a small fee if you have no way of having the mattress removed and taken to refuse. They will ensure it is recycled professionally.

We left the mattress for a few hours, then it was getting late and the young ones decided it was time to test it out and have a sleep. Simba also sells bedding, duvets, pillows and more. At the moment, there are free gifts with every mattress purchased from the website, which is a huge bonus of being full bed in a box with all the trimmings.

The Young One Says

After now sleeping on the mattress for several nights, the young adult who is sleeping on it, is finding it is helping with headaches. It keeps him cooler than his old mattress and and seems to be a perfect combination of support and comfort at the same time. When it was first expanding, we wondered if it might be too soft, as it was the top layer we felt the most, but once it had sat for a few hours, it became clear that the base of the mattress is the supportive element and those layers take a while to settle.

He has had less headaches since he used this mattress, and that might be due to the foam base and the layers agreeing more with him than his old one. How to Wash Your Hoka Trainers in the Washing Machine

I know Hoka recommends not to wash them in the machine, but running shoes and walking trainers that have seen a few hundred miles end up looking fairly bashed, mucky and smelly. They get to a point where a scrub with a brush just isn’t enough. By this point, my walking or running shoes still have plenty life in them, but I often used to replace them as they just looked so bad.

Hoka trainers are pillowy soft, and many are on fairly high slabs of foam that allow for maximum cush, comfort and performance. My favourites these days are the Hoka Bondi as they are just so comfortable, but keeping them looking fresh and make me want to keep wearing them, means I turn to the washing machine.

My trainers for this post are past their best and have some scuffs and marks from walking in woods and forests with the dogs. It is always a good idea to test out washing your trainers on an old pair of shoes that you’d just throw out otherwise.

Machine Washing Trainers

Disclaimer: Don’t do this unless you are prepared for imperfect results. It most definitely isn’t a foolproof way of washing trainers, and there is always an element of risk involved when shoes go into a washing machine.

Step by Step Washing Trainers in the Machine

Have Your Cleaning Products Ready

I use four items to wash my trainers. My washer and dryer have trainer racks, but I don’t use those at all, as I don’t find that a very successful method for me.

My products of choice, along with some regular washing powder, all from Amazon.

Oxy Clean Max Force Stain Remover (Aff Link)

Preparation

If you want to, you can remove the laces and insoles. It does help with drying time, though I never remove the laces, I just untie them. I do remove the insoles and also wash them at the same time in a separate bag. Use a hard brush or old toothbrush to loosen and remove baked in dirt. mud and anything else yukky from the soles. I used to try and give the uppers a quick clean too, but no longer do, and just brush off any mud or muck.

Tough Stains

I spray the Oxy Clean Stain Remove on the spots with really rough and tough stains that look as if they won’t come out easily.

My washing machine bags came in a two pack, so I pop insoles into one bag and both shoes into another. I put the shoes in with soles facing each other, so that the bulk of the work of the chenille fabric fibres can really get to work on the trainers. Before closing up the bag, I pour a scoop of the Vanish Oxy Action on top of the trainers in the bag.

Machine Wash

I use cool wash at 20 or 30 degrees. When the bag is in the washing machine.

I throw a scoop of powder on the top of that, set a cool cycle at slow spin speed and let it do its magic. Hot water is likely to damage the foam, so a cool cycle is a must.

Drying

Stuff the shoes with some paper towels or old towels to help them keep the shape and speed up the drying process. I don’t put my shoes into the dryer as I think the washing machine is a big enough risk on its own and my goal is clean and nice smelling trainers.

To dry, I usually put my trainers in the boiler cupboard or close to a radiator but not touching it. I sit the insoles there too, to allow those to also dry out.

Results

This is going to depend on how you approach the trainer cleaning and what your expectations are. My blue ones are waterproof and thick material, and held up perfectly well in the machine.

My black shoes are fabric uppers and less tough, so after a few washes, the black colouring on the sole has discoloured just a little bit with a little flaking, but compared to how bad they looked before washing, I can live with that as these are hard working trainers rather than fashion ones.

Be realistic, as washing hard worked trainers isn’t going to bring them back to factory like new quality, but will give fresh and clean smelling trainers that look much better than mud soaked filthy daily runners.

What Did We Think?

We’re just getting started with this kit. Adding to what’s in the box, we found an old chopping board handy for shaping/cutting/using the little shape cutters on. We needed a little pair of scissors and 4 AA batteries for the oven. That was a nice surprise really, as I was not expecting this set to actually cure the clay properly, and it really does. We baked twice for extra hardness. At this price point, that was a nifty little thing to have and much appreciated.

The set is fairly easy to use. It’s just a case of modelling the clay, cutting out shapes, then decorating with some of the accessories provided to then bake. For the pendants, we used the pointy end of the cutting tool to make a little hole for the thread to go through, and make the shape into a pendant.

We have a four year old using this set under supervision and I think it’s going to get a lot of use over the winter. There is also a handy refill kit that I found on Amazon for £7.99, so I’m topping this up for snow days. I’ve added the links below.

It’s coming up to the Christmas holidays and the wee one was unsure of what to get her teacher for a Christmas present, so she’s practicing with the kit to make a little gift that she can take in to school. The gold and silver foil is nice and makes little gifts sparkly.

We’ve yet to make a ring, which is the next project on our list. A pink ring with little baubles on will be next little attempt. For slightly older children, their imagination can run riot to make fun little pieces of jewellery on their own
