We all need sleep.  I blame lack of sleep when the kids were young for my wrinkles, but that’s just a guess.  the CDC believes that lack of sleep can lead to increased risk of diabetes, obesity and depression.  I don’t know if that’s true, but lack of sleep definitely has negative effects on my body, and we all know that driving while tired can lead to devastating consequences if we fall asleep at the wheel.

Giveaway & Von Shef Digital Slow Cooker Review. Ends 16th Dec 15

We received the Von Shef Digital Slow Cooker for review from Domu, the lifestyle brand of Designer Habitat.  My old 6.5 Litre slow cooker needed replacing, so the arrival of a new one was very welcome indeed.  There’s also the chance to win one for yourself further down the post.

I’ve written about Domu before, when I tried their Von Shef Frozen Dessert Maker.  Domu aim to provide great gadgets at lower prices than their competitors.

Digital Slow Cooker Review

The digital slow cooker was voted one of their Top Five Slow Cookers by Great British Food Magazine in September, and with the ability to use a timer on cooking, my absolute love of slow cookers has reached a whole new level of practical.

I’ve always wished I could switch my slow cooker off after a few hours simmering, so that I didn’t need to worry about overcooking anything, especially if I was in a hurry, and only had time to use the high cooking setting for a few hours.  As much as I like to time coming home for meals from slow cooking, I always worry about spoiled food if I’m late back and the slow cooker is still bubbling away on high.

This was very easy to operate.  Switch on and off with the button on the right, choose high, low or keep warm from the one on the right and use the scroll buttons to increase or decrease cooking time.

  • The huge 6.5 Litre capacity, can cater for up to 15-20 average servings, although in my family, we tend to fill it half to three quarters full.  With potatoes added as a complete meal in a pot, we’ve had 10 people eat from ours.  On a typical day, we have six people to feed, and just over half full does it for us as a meal, with a little leftover for hungry boys to eat later in the evening as a snack.
  • The lid is strong and made of toughened glass.
  • Although I haven’t used this feature yet, when cooking is finished, the timer should enter a keep warm mode until the machine is switched off.
  • Both the dish and lid are suitable for washing in the dishwasher.

As part of the Domu challenge, I developed a Cumin and Coriander Steak Casserole for their new Slow Cooker Recipe Hub.   If you want to see my recipe on there, you can find it here.

The recipes on the new hub, include ones for chicken, beef, the paleo diet, with curry, fish and vegetarian options.

There’s even a section for baked goodies.

The Bourbon Peach Galette seems like a good one to try, although I can’t quite figure out how it would fit in a slow cooker.

For that reason alone, I suspect I’ll have a try over the Xmas season.

To help us along, Cafepoint have shared their 15 Types Of Coffee To Try Before You Die.  From there, I learned how to actually make a Frappuchino at home, instead of costing me over £4 a go at our local coffee shop.

Perhaps I’ve been living under a very shielded cloud, but a Macchiato is something I’d never actually heard of in the past.   The fact it includes caramel sauce and vanilla syrup means that, as a diabetic, it is pretty much off the list for me, but it sounds like another one my kids would like to try.

As a diabetic, I have to say, that I do agree with him on that score, 100%.

As someone who’s taken a huge interest in the food I eat for quite a while now, this book has come as a lovely addition to my kitchen.

I’ve tried a couple of the recipes.  Here’s what my version of Jamie’s fabulous Jar Salad, and a mega tasty Chicken & Squash Cacciatore looked like.  I’ll share these recipes with you another day.

Hamlyns of Scotland brand of porridge oats is 50 years old this year.  Their porridge oats and oatmeal are well known around these parts up in Aberdeen as one of the go to brands.

I don’t remember a time in my life when Hamlyns products weren’t on shop shelves, so for me, it’s one of those essential things that tends to get bought regularly.

Hamlyns have offered a gorgeous hamper for one of my readers, which included a Sophie Conran for Portmeirion white china breakfast set for two, a Hamlyns teddy and apron, a hand-turned wooden spurte and the whole range of Hamlyns traditional and instant porridges.

It’s a hamper that anyone would love to own.  It’s worth around £200, and is an ideal way to get to know how versatile oats really are.

When it comes to oatmeal, I tend to be a straight up buy the oats girl, usually pinhead for making oatcakes, or medium for our porridge, although I know many people who prefer a rougher grade for their breakfast dish.

Oatmeal isn’t limited to porridge and oatcakes though.  Up here in Scotland, we made puddings with it, often Cranachan, make skirlie to go with our mince and tatties, and even bake it into cakes. It’s really a much more versatile ingredient that most people tend to realise.

Jamie‘s Italian Aberdeen is one of the newer enterprises.  The Italian Restaurants are a partnership between Jamie Oliver and his Italian mentor, chef Gennaro Contaldo.

The first restaurant opened in Oxford in May 2008, and has grown to many new ventures.  The Jamie’s Italian menu is based on dishes that people would eat in Italy, carefully made, but without much fuss.

Pasta is made on site each day and the children’s menu is perfect for families.  Our local in Aberdeen is currently the most Northerly restaurant and sits on the first and second floors of the old Esselmont & Macintosh Department Store on Union Street.  I have many memories of Esslemont and Macintosh, and was sad to see it go, but I’m sure Jamie’s Italian fills the space well.

Booths are spacious and there are large open windows, so it’s perfect to relax.  There is also a chance to host parties and celebrations on the upper floor, for up to 130 people.
