How to create your own Halloween banner

image004

Materials List:

  • Motley Monsters Designer Series Paper
  • Build a Banner Simply Created Kit
  • 2014-2016 In Colour Stampin’ Write Markers
  • Little Letters Thinlit Dies
  • Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine
  • Owl Builder Punch
  • Large Oval Punch
  • ¾“ Circle Punch
  • Basic Black A4 Cardstock
  • Whisper White A4 Cardstock
  • Silver Baker’s Twine
  • Multipurpose Liquid Glue
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch

Step one
Take a sheet of Motley Monsters Designer Series Paper and a banner shape of your choice from the Build a Banner Simply Created Kit.  Draw around the banner twice onto the Designer Series Paper and cut out.

Once the Designer Series paper pieces are cut, punch holes in the top corners to match the placement on the banner piece to hang the banner flags from. Set these two pieces to one side.

image006
Step two
Take the “b” letter stencil from the Banner Kit.  Position the stencil centrally on the banner flag, with the top corners of the stencil level with the base of the metal eyelets, as per the picture.

Using the brush end of the Tangelo Twist Stampin’ Write marker, lightly colour through the stencil onto the banner, keeping the colour as even as possible across the letter. Repeat the stencilling for two “o” flags to spell “boo”.

image008

Step three

Using the Little Letters Thinlits dies, cut the letters to spell “Happy Hallowe’en” from Basic Black cardstock. Make sure you save the central cut-out from one of the “A” cuts, as this will be used for the apostrophe in the sentiment.

image010

Step four

To make bats, cut two owls from Basic Black cardstock, using the Owl Builder punch.

Using the Large Oval punch and the ¾“ Circle punch, create two “wings” for each bat as shown, four wings in total.  Stick to the back of the bats.

 image012

Step five

To make ghosts, cut three more owls from Whisper White cardstock using the Owl Builder punch. Cut the feet off the white owls and edge with a light line of black ink using a marker pen or an ink pad to define the edges.

Turn the owl shapes upside down to create the ghosts. Add the mid-sized circles from the black owl cut-outs to the white owls for the ghosts’ eyes, and use the same circles from the white cut-outs for the bats eyes.  Add ‘pupils’ to the bats’ eyes. Stick the bats and ghosts together using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

image014

Step six

Put the letters across the white banner flags to spell “Happy Hallowe’en”, and stick into place using Multipurpose Liquid Glue. Add the bats and ghosts to each banner piece, again using Multipurpose Liquid Glue. Thread a piece of Silver Bakers Twine or similar through each of the banner pieces, and hang in place.

Win a Pentax WG-3 Digital Camera worth £250 + with Specsavers. Closes 31st May 2014

I’ve teamed up with Specsavers to launch a photography competition.  It’s to capture the special bond struck up by children with their friends, siblings or even their family pets from a young age.

The winner of the competition will scoop a Pentax WG-3 digital camera worth more than £250 and a free sight test and eyecare for the winning parent and child, so it’s a really good prize to win.   The Pentax WG-3 camera is a waterproof, coldproof, shockproof and crushproof digital camera and comes in orange.  I just wish I could enter myself.  I’d personally love this camera.

Specsavers Camera 650

Anyone who reads my blog can enter, and the competition is to celebrate the start of Specsavers ‘two free pairs’ promotion in-store at stores across Scotland, which will see children qualify for one pair of specs free from the NHS and a second free pair from Specsavers free of charge.

Specsavers was founded in 1984 by husband and wife team, Doug and Dame Mary Perkins, who pioneered the optical joint venture partnership model and also revolutionised the industry with their innovative concept of affordable, fashionable eyecare for everyone.

As my optician of choice, specsavers are the suppliers of my current face framing eyewear and contact lenses.  I find them good quality, reasonably priced and very friendly.

Dave Quigley, regional chair for Specsavers Scotland, says:  ‘To celebrate our fantastic new offer we’re celebrating that perfect pairing that makes our children so happy. We know that at a young age, friendships are vitally important, it’s that bond that we’re hoping to capture through our photography competition.’

Specsavers Logo 1

The two free pairs offer is available now and is valid for children up to the age of 16. Details and information on NHS sight tests are available in store or online at Specsavers Online.

The Competition:

Obviously I can’t enter, but I’ve included a picture of mine from when my youngest had only been with us for two days.  My boys are adopted and three whirlwinds arrived to upset my resident canine baby at the same time.

This picture of the baby with my spoiled young girl lab was the beginning of a long beautiful friendship.  She inched closer and closer and they stayed in that spot for almost an hour, sizing each other up.  They became instant friends and are still close now that she is nearly 14 and the wee boy in the picture almost 12.

Kids-1

To Enter:

Photos submitted to the competition can be taken by either a child or a relative, so long as they capture the child’s favoured pairing.

The competition will be judged by Specsavers.

I would like to post the winning entry on my blog, as would Specsavers, so please ensure you are happy for it to be published before sending it in.

Obviously I would like everyone who enters (or even those who don’t) to leave a comment and Tweet or Facebook about it, but it isn’t mandatory.  As it’s a photographic competition, you can enter by either:

  • Tell us your name and which part of the UK you are from in your entry so that we know for publishing the winner.
  • Send the photograph to specsavers@scottishmum.com OR
  • Writing a blog post and leaving the link in a comment on this post.

Add your entry to the linky below if you wish to share your fabulous photos.  I’ve added mine although it doesn’t count, to show you how it will look.

That’s it, easy peasy.  The competition will close on the 31st May 2014 at midnight.

As long as I get the photograph and a way to contact you, your entry counts.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Closing Date:  31st May 2014 at Midnight.
  • The Competition is open to UK Entrants only.
  • The Winning entry will be published on the Scottish Mum Blog and Specsavers Promotions.
  • 1 Winner will win a Pentax WG-3 digital camera worth more than £250 and a free sight test and eyecare for the winning parent and child.
  • The prize will be sent to you from Specsavers.
  • The Scottish Mum Blog is not responsible for your prize and cannot be held liable in any way for non delivery or non receipt at your end.
  • Winners will be notified within 7 days of giveaway end. If the winner does not respond within 7 days of being notified, a new winner will be drawn.
  • The winner will be chosen by Specsavers.
  • Scottish Mum Blog and Specsavers reserves the right to amend, add or withdraw this giveaway at any time.
  • Ensure you have consent for any persons included in your picture.  The Scottish Mum Blog and Specsavers are not liable in the event of publication or the submission of any images without explicit consent of the people included, and the responsible parent or guardian in the case of a minor.

Win a bibT Wipe Clean T-Shirt – Closing Date 4th May 2014

bibT recently sent me a wipe clean t-shirt to review.  I have a very young nephew and thought it would make a lovely present for him, and I was right.

bibT

The bibT has a very soft t-shirt base which I found hard to imagine until I had one in my hands.   The cotton is 100% organic supersoft and I can tell you that it feels really nice to the touch.

There are adjustable neck poppers and the bib part reaches from the neck to bottom of the t-shirt.   I initially wondered if the bit under the neck piece would be scratchy, but it’s the soft t-shirt material, so it looks fine to me.

I haven’t washed the one I have, but I’m told it is washable at 40 degrees.  It certainly looks much better than having a bib permanently wrapped around a childs neck.   If these had been around when my kids were young, I suspect I’d have been persuaded to get a few for going out and about.

There are several different designs and come in long and short sleeves.  Sizes are available to fit any child up the age of around 4.

As a gift, I’d be impressed as mine arrived in lovely tissue, wrapped with ribbon.

bibT in tissue

I’ve got one to giveaway to my readers too.  You can have your own choice of which design from the bibT website.    As well as being functional day to day, I think these make for fabulous presents.

  • Open to UK Mainland Entrants only.

Review and Giveaway: Thomas Kitchen Knives From Tesco – Closing Date: 1st June 2014

I’ve been attempting to take part in the Tesco Blogger Challenge recently, which meant I had to try my hand at vegetable carving.  In the end, I’ve had to give up as it seem that my skills really do not lie in carving vegetables.  I tried mushrooms and tomatoes and although I could slice and dice with absolutely no problem at all, the more delicate work for carving seemed to escape my hands.

So, in short, I found decorative carving much harder than it looked, but the Thomas knives that Tesco sent me to practice with are absolutely fantastic.  I really did think twice about showing you some of the pictures of my disasters, but hey ho, I can only get better if I keep trying.

See how much work I still have to do – to be able to do some of the fabulous carvings I’ve seen online.

Mine:

To give you an idea – THIS is what I was trying to get and failed miserably with.   It’s classed as “easy.”

Tomato Rose

I’ve not given up.  I have a plan and am going to try again, so be prepared for another post for Thomas Kitchen Knives from Tesco, but in the meantime, Tesco have also offered a set of 5 knives, including the knife block, for one lucky reader of my blog – and I want to get that out to my readers.

In the set are:

  • 1 x Knife Block
  • 1 x 4.5″  Utility Knife
  • 1 x 5.”    Small Santoku Knife
  • 1 x 6.8″  Large Santoku Knife
  • 1 x 7.4″  Cook’s Knife
  • 1 x 7.8″  Bread Knife

For anyone who is not sure what a Santoku Knife is, it has Japanese historical significance.  It is a knife that is excellent at chopping, cutting, dicing and mincing.    Blades usually range from around 5″ – 8″ and has a design that is comfortable in the hand, and allows good grip while still being able to use the full functions of the knives.

The dimples on the blade help release the food after cutting and helps with its versatility.

The closing date for the set of kitchen knives on offer is 1st of June 2014 at midnight.

Tesco are also running a sticker promotion between 3rd March – 1st June 2014 where you can save up to 70% on exclusive kitchenware products at Tesco. For every £20 you spend online OR in-store you can collect a sticker, once you’ve collected five stickers you can use these to save up to 70% off professional kitchenware items of your own.  Stickers can be collected from 3rd March 2014 – 25th May 2014 and must be redeemed by 1st June 2014.   Find out more.

Prize Draw: Win an iPad Air. Closes 6th February 2014

Two years ago, I decided that I wanted to do up a few rooms in my house on a budget and not dip into the savings at Christmas.

The only stipulation was that the blog had to pay for it.  I managed to do up my lounge in 2012 and I’ve finally got enough to do mini makeovers for the kids rooms this year.

I set up a separate account that the blog money goes into, which also makes it easy for me at the end of the year to know how much to declare to the ever present tax man.  It’s not a huge amount, but it does help out with some lovely little extras that I’d not buy otherwise.

loungefinishedview2

Giveaway: Castle MacLellan Hamper – Ends 13th December 2013

pate4

We’ve been sent some lovely pates to try.  They are unusual, tasty and the kids just seem to enjoy them.  Castle MacLellan is a Scottish company based in Dumfries and Galloway. It has recently undergone a brand refresh to emphasise its strong connections with local suppliers and has updated the website and launched a new range of recipes and new packaging for the pates.

We tried our pates, and I have to admit to my favourite being the Chicken Liver with Scottish Heather Honey.  Two of my boys are working through the Smoked Salmon with Lemon Juice and Horseradish.  We like pate here, so it’s been a popular trial.

Pate3

Castle MacLellan is different from the regular food supplier as it is owned by the Kavli Trust and supports good causes in the UK and abroad.

The Kavli Trust was set up by the Kavli family in 1962 to carry forward the philanthropic work of the founders. The Kavli Trust has donated funds to many worthwhile causes. The Kavli Trust owns the Kavli Group, which provides the funds for its humanitarian work.  Part of the profits from the Kavli group is reinvested in strengthening and developing the groups operations, while the remainder is donated to good causes in research, culture and humanitarian work.

Grants from the trust have been risen substantially in recent years. NOK 25 million (about £2.5 million) was distributed in 2012 for humanitarian, research and culture projects.

The Kavli Trust also helps support research in important social areas which can benefit humanity by helping prevent and combat serious illnesses and damage caused by modern lifestyles.

I think we can all agree that Castle MacLellan and the Kavli Trust are very unusual in what they do with their profits.

I have some fabulous Castle MacLellan Pates that will come in a hamper just for you.

In the giveaway, there will be:

Castle MacLellan Christmas range:

Pate 1

  • Chicken Pâté  with Brandy
  • Duck Pâté with Port
  • Smoked Salmon Terrine

Castle MacLellan core range:

  • Chicken Liver Pâté with Scottish heather honey
  • Oven Roasted Mushroom Pâté  with garlic and thyme
  • Rannoch Smoked Duck Pâté  with Bramley apple jelly
  • Luxury Orkney Crab Terrine with lemon juice and Galloway mustard
  • Scottish Smoked Salmon Pâté with lemon juice and horseradish
