How to create your own Halloween banner

image004

Materials List:

  • Motley Monsters Designer Series Paper
  • Build a Banner Simply Created Kit
  • 2014-2016 In Colour Stampin’ Write Markers
  • Little Letters Thinlit Dies
  • Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine
  • Owl Builder Punch
  • Large Oval Punch
  • ¾“ Circle Punch
  • Basic Black A4 Cardstock
  • Whisper White A4 Cardstock
  • Silver Baker’s Twine
  • Multipurpose Liquid Glue
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch

Step one
Take a sheet of Motley Monsters Designer Series Paper and a banner shape of your choice from the Build a Banner Simply Created Kit.  Draw around the banner twice onto the Designer Series Paper and cut out.

Once the Designer Series paper pieces are cut, punch holes in the top corners to match the placement on the banner piece to hang the banner flags from. Set these two pieces to one side.

image006
Step two
Take the “b” letter stencil from the Banner Kit.  Position the stencil centrally on the banner flag, with the top corners of the stencil level with the base of the metal eyelets, as per the picture.

Using the brush end of the Tangelo Twist Stampin’ Write marker, lightly colour through the stencil onto the banner, keeping the colour as even as possible across the letter. Repeat the stencilling for two “o” flags to spell “boo”.

image008

Step three

Using the Little Letters Thinlits dies, cut the letters to spell “Happy Hallowe’en” from Basic Black cardstock. Make sure you save the central cut-out from one of the “A” cuts, as this will be used for the apostrophe in the sentiment.

image010

Step four

To make bats, cut two owls from Basic Black cardstock, using the Owl Builder punch.

Using the Large Oval punch and the ¾“ Circle punch, create two “wings” for each bat as shown, four wings in total.  Stick to the back of the bats.

 image012

Step five

To make ghosts, cut three more owls from Whisper White cardstock using the Owl Builder punch. Cut the feet off the white owls and edge with a light line of black ink using a marker pen or an ink pad to define the edges.

Turn the owl shapes upside down to create the ghosts. Add the mid-sized circles from the black owl cut-outs to the white owls for the ghosts’ eyes, and use the same circles from the white cut-outs for the bats eyes.  Add ‘pupils’ to the bats’ eyes. Stick the bats and ghosts together using Multipurpose Liquid Glue.

image014

Step six

Put the letters across the white banner flags to spell “Happy Hallowe’en”, and stick into place using Multipurpose Liquid Glue. Add the bats and ghosts to each banner piece, again using Multipurpose Liquid Glue. Thread a piece of Silver Bakers Twine or similar through each of the banner pieces, and hang in place.

Just Dance Kids on the Wii & Giveaway

Just Dance Kids by Ubisoft came to us recently through a lovely contact who wanted us to try it out and review the Just Dance for Kids game.

The disc has lots of kids favourites – including :

  • Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
  • Hokey Cokey
  • The Lion Sleeps Tonight
  • Jingle Bells
  • Crocodile Rock
  • Shake Your Groove Thing
  • The Shimmie Shake
  • Intuition
  • Despicable Me
  • Positivity
  • Follow The Leader
And lots lots more.  All the songs are at Just Dance Kids on the website.

It just goes to show that sometimes, kids are never too old to enjoy something that they’ve been given.    Here they are with the Gummy Bear Song.

My boys had a lovely afternoon playing all the songs on the disc, and we had an afternoon with friends, and their cousins over who were all younger and were tickled pink to be able to dance about to the tunes.  I wish I could have videoed them all when they were doing it, but my boys happily went on before bedtime and I managed to sneak up behind them and get the videos.

They really enjoyed going back to some of childrens songs and singing along to the older ones they knew as well as some of the more recent ones. Littlest said it was good fun being a “kid” for the day.   When you dance to the tunes, you build up a score that means you can challenge your friends and family to see who gets the blue score and is the winner with the highest score.

The screen has a cool icon that means children can skip the song themselves if they want to change the routine, and don’t have to go back into complicated menus to find the next songs.  It’s a little touch that pre-school children who don’t yet read will enjoy as they can shuffle through the songs to please themselves and choose from singers like Michael Buble, the Wiggles, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

The children here mostly played three at at time – all lined up in a row, and all having an individual score.  The game also lets them play against each other in teams to see who comes out on top.   It’s a neat feature.

My boys are getting older and we have some more games on the way to review, so we have decided that someone else should get the benefit of this disc to have fun with over Christmas.  We certainly enjoyed it.

—————————————————————————————————————

If you’d like us to send you our review copy, just leave a comment with a way to contact you – and tell me which song you like best from the playlist and why.    The full playlist is on the website – and remember this is a copy that has been opened and used for a whole day.

Disclaimer:  We were provided a copy of the Just Dance Kids Game for  the Wii to write this review.

Have You Heard About Software 4 Students ? A Competition Giveaway

I am really excited about this competition.  I am going to make this an easy one though, as its so fabulous.

Any student can use the Company, which is endorsed by Microsoft as an outlet to sell educational versions of their products.  These are NOT the shortened versions that people used to buy for students and small businesses.  They are the full software packages, that can be bought by the families of children at school, or adults who are students themselves.  I have bought twice, and I absolutely love that the software is the full version when you get it.

Because they are full versions, the winner of this competition will have to adhere to the terms and conditions set by eg Microsoft, and I think that is a fair deal to get the full software at such fabulous prices.  The software is much cheaper than we could buy it for, but it will be restricted to the amount of computers it can be used on, and it is limited to non-commercial use.   You can choose to download it, or the software can be sent to you on a disk.

To buy Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus  from Software4Students, I would be  £37.89.  To buy the package from PC World today it would be £349.95.  That is a huge saving, and it includes the whole suite of software, including the full versions or Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Outlook, Publisher, Communicator and Infopath.

That is a lot of software.

The easiest way to let you know what it is exactly that they do, is to give you a short summary from them.   I have a giveaway at the end, so stick with reading.

Software4Students offers students of all ages, their parents and teachers the opportunity to make huge savings of up to 90% in software costs.

Software4Students started as a pilot program in 2005 helping disadvantaged schools to minimise the digital divide and boost social mobility, providing students with low cost opportunities to enhance their digital skillsets. Due to the success of the program it was extended it to all students and their families in the UK and Ireland, to help students prepare for their future and compete in the demanding technology–led world.

The Software4Students portfolio of products includes software from popular manufacturers like Microsoft, Adobe Creative Suite CS5.5, Kaspersky antivirus software and more. The offering has proved to be hugely successful in the past few years, being endorsed by many positive mentions on different media like The Guardian UK and a massive following of over thirteen thousand people on Facebook.

In addition to their existing offers, Software4Students has recently launched bundled packages of software that lead to even bigger savings when buying software together. And as if all of this was not enough good news for the education and parenting community, Software4Students are also giving customers the chance to win one of the hottest tablets in the market each week for the month of September when they purchase any Adobe product through their site.
———————————————————————–

GIVEAWAY

Software4Students has authorised the winners choice of any 1 of the software from Microsoft below.   The winner must be able to meet the  Terms and Conditions for students, parents and teachers.   The closing date is 29th October 2011.

> Office 2010
> Windows 7 Upgrade
> Microsoft Maths
> Microsoft Expression Studio
> Microsoft Project Pro

I know the one I would be picking if it was me, but it’s not me – so what do you have to do to win one of these fab pieces of software?  I told you it would be easy, so all I am going to ask you to do is the following.

  • Follow me on @scottish_mum on Twitter
  • Follow @studentsoftware on Twitter
  • Leave a comment saying which product you would choose and why.  (Software4Students will help choose a winner)
  • Leave your contact details, eg twitter user name, so that if you win I can contact you.
  • Tweet this
“I entered to win Microsoft Software from @studentsoftware with @scottish_mum at “
Thats it – it is easy as pie.  After the 29th October, we will pick a winner.  The winner will be notified via the contact details in the comment.    If I can’t contact you within 3 days of the competition finishing, I will redraw an alternative winner.    Find out more about Software4Students on their Website, or talk to them on Facebook or Twitter.

Good Luck

Competition – £20 of Book Tokens from Little Monkey – Book Shop 4 Kids – Closing Date 31st May 2011

Joanna from Little Monkey – Bookshop 4 Kids asked me to take a look at her website and the books that she has for sale.   As I am such an avid book reader, I couldn’t resist taking a peek at what her shop has to offer.

Little Monkey – Book Shop 4 Kids

The bookshop has a small, but comprehensive collection of books, small toys and games, and is certain to grow with time.

I found a product that one of my children would be particularly interested in.   A puzzle that would fit in with his favourite toys, and certainly a puzzle that I have not come across anywhere else.

48 large pieces to create their very own brightly illustrated floor puzzle.    A lovely product.  I could imagine one of my boys spending hours and hours on this puzzle, as he is an avid digger fan, and it is certainly on my shopping list.

Little Monkey has also offered my blog readers the chance to win £20 of books from her bookshop.   This is a lovely prize to get, and there is sure to be something on her website to suit everyone.

  • 5 point safety harness.
  • Height adjustable handles
  • Hood and bumper can be taken off

I allocate each qualifying entrant a number, based on how many entries they have, and then draw at the random number website to make it fair.  Good luck to everyone who enters.

If you are new to my blog, your first comment will need to be approved before it shows up.

Mothers Day Giveaway from Interflora – Ends Sunday 27th March

Sponsored Post

I arrived home to find a lovely surprise on my doorstep.  There were the flowers and box of chocolates that Interflora had sent me to review.    When they asked me to review one of their Mothers Day Gifts, I jumped at the chance.  We are all mothers, who have mothers, so it is a fantastic product to have.

I was given some links on their website to browse, and I had a good old root through all the products they have on offer for Mothers day.   There was a huge choice on offer, from hampers in the Mothers day gifts section, through to gorgeous Mothers day flowers, and the  absolutely fabulous Spring flowers.

As a mother myself, and with special needs children, a bunch of flowers appearing in our house is a rare occurence.   The only flowers that I usually see are the ones that I buy for other people.  I decided that, for me, a gift with some chocolates would be appreciated in our house, with the flowers for me, and the chocolates for my children.  It gave me the best of both worlds.  As tempting as the Spring Gift with a bottle of wine was, I think my children appreciated the chocolates a lot more.

I chose the Scented Spring Perfect Gift with Chocolates, which was priced at £31.95.

I picked up the vase, with their box of chocolates and eagerly took it into my kitchen.  I tried to take a nice shot of the flowers, but I’m not a professional photographer, so please forgive the shots if they look slightly amateurish.

Here are my flowers in all their glory on my mantlepiece, and they certainly brighten up my room.

The smells were absolutely fantastic as I walked along my corridor.   Even my husband who is usually florally challenged said that they had a lovely smell.   I was surprised to see the flowers were in the vase, with water already in it.  I am guessing it is to preserve the life of the flowers, and for me it worked.  I loved them just for the smell.    The vase is quite a sturdy, heavy glass, definately a substantial vase.

The chocolates, well, they were lovely, as my boys could tell you.  The box is rather nice, and with the little chiffon ribbon, looks very swish.  Inside the box, the Maison Fougere chocolates for Interflora looked lovely.  With 12 gorgeous chocolates, in a mix of dark and milk chocolate, there was something for all of us.   There was even a competition here for who would get the red heart….You can hardly make out the red heart in this picture, but it really was a vibrant, lovely shade of red.

Apologies for this photo, as the chocolates have now been eaten, and I have no chance to take a better one.

The best part of all this, is that Interflora are allowing me to give away the same gift set that I received as a gift for Mothers Day.     You, or your choice of recipient will receive the same bunch of flowers, with chocolates and the vase, and you can choose your own message to put on it.    You can see the gift set on the website here.

Scented Spring Perfect Gift with Chocolates

All you have to do to enter is:

1.  Make sure you either follow me on twitter, or google friend connect my blog if you haven’t already.  If you want to do both, thats fab by me.

2. Hop on over to Interflora using the links on this post, and tell me in a comment how many gift sets Interflora are selling in their mothers day categories.   These two things entitle you to one entry.

3.  For an additional entry, tweet the following:

Win a Mothers Day gift from Interflora with @scottish_mum Enter at  http://scottishmum.com/2011/03/mothers-day-giveaway-from-interflora-ends-sunday-27th-march/   Pls RT

The competition closes on Sunday 27th March 2011 to allow the winners entry to go through for Mothers Day, which is on Sunday 3rd April.  The winner will have to claim their prize before midnight on Monday 28th March.  If it is not claimed by then, it will be given to the runner up, via selection through random numbers, of the entrants.

Good luck everyone.   It’s going to be a lovely arrival on someone’s doorstep.

Competition Giveaway – Crystal Deodorant Worth £5 + Ends 23 Jan 2011

Win a crystal deodorant.

Over the years, I have spent lots of money, and spent much time in looking for, and trying out new deodorants and anti-perspirants.  Last year I found a natural deodorant that worked for me.  It is a salt deodorant which has many fantastic properties, and the main one is the lack of things bad for you.

I used to stay away from things like garlic and onions as they seemed to come out through my pores.  No matter which deodorant or anti-perspirant, I used I could not find one that kept my underarms smelling sweetly from morning to night without being self-conscious.

My expectations when I tried a salt crystal deodorant, were much the same as the approach I had taken to the many other concoctions I have tried, and fully expected it not to work.

I have been using them for a few years now, and have found the brand that I like the best.    Lafe’s deodorant salt crystal deodorants have no additives, no parabens and are easy to use.  You just wet them, then rub it on your skin.  No chemicals, nothing nasty and it works for me.

It’s giveaway time, and I have one of these to give to a lucky reader.  It is a large deodorant stone, which is likely to last anywhere from 9 months to a year and more before it needs to be replaced.  It comes with it own dish to sit in your bathroom or in a cupboard and has a little velvet pouch in case it is needed for travelling.

I will put all the entries into a hat and draw a lucky winner on the 24th January.

These stones retail at approximately £5 – 7 with postage on top.

TO ENTER – restricted to UK & Ireland entrants only.

  1. Leave a comment on this post to say what you have done, AND subscribe to the blog via email or rss feed to have your details entered into the hat once.
  2. For a second entry,
Follow me on twitter if you are not already  , and tweet the sentence below.
“I entered to win a Salt Crystal Deodorant worth £5 + with Scottish Mum.  Enter to win before 23 Jan.  http://scottishmum.com
  3. For a third entry
Follow me on facebook as scottishmum and post the sentence below.
“I entered to win a Salt Crystal Deodorant worth £5 + with Scottish Mum.  Enter to win before 23 Jan.  http://scottishmum.com

Results will be posted on scottishmum blog on 24th January 2011.  Make sure you check to see if you have won.   If it is unclaimed for 24 hours, I will pull another winner out of the hat.

Each person has the potential to have their name entered three times to win.   If you are new to my blog, your first comment will need to be approved before it shows up.

This competition comes to you from Scottish Mum and has no connection with Lafe.   By entering, you are agreeing that Scottish Mum Blog, or anyone connected with it, are not responsible in any way for the use of the product, and you use it at your own risk.
